First of all, I can’t do this week’s Quick Links without mentioning that New York finally passed the Marriage Equality Bill—woohoo! It was also incredibly serendipitous that the announcement was made during Pride Week and when the Empire State Building was lit up like a rainbow.
And on another serious topic, lately there has been quite a bit of chatter in the design community over gender roles, something that’s definitely been on my mind as of late. I read quite a few interesting opinions on the issue last week, so I thought I’d gather some of them all together in one place:
- It would seem that the conversation started with this article found on GOOD, Why We Can’t Let Design Become a Boys Club. (Also check out their list of 25 female designers and illustrators they love.)
- Much of the debate stemmed from Evan Stremke’s Momentus project—a project I’ve showed some excitement for in the past—which has an all-male contributor list. He personally addressed the issue here and here.
- We heard a couple of responses from females in the design world including Margot of Pitch Design Union, Melanie Richards of Fuzzco, Tiffany Rolfe of AdAge and Katie Kirk of Eight Hour Day.
And on a lighter note, Freelance Ain’t Free t-shirts are now available! Get em while they’re hot!
