Student Work: Zan Barnett

With as much negativity that exists within and toward the world of hip hop, the genre’s positive influences can be easy to overlook. With this in mind, Zan Barnett designed Hip Hoptimism, a book which focuses on hip hop lyrics with positive, motivational messages, for his graduate seminar class at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA.

Hip Hoptimism, full of illustrations, hand drawn type and more, is an A-Z book which showcases a different hip hop artist for each letter, with each spread opening to reveal a set of positive lyrics by that artist. I appreciate Zan’s choice to focus his concept around positivity and really dig the variety in his execution.

Keep up with all of Zan’s work and see more pages of Hip Hoptimism on his website.
