In a shocking move that has rattled the digital creative community, DesignCuts, a prominent marketplace for digital assets, abruptly ceased operations on January 16, 2025. The sudden closure, which came without prior warning to either customers or sellers, coincided with an announcement that Creative Market had acquired the DesignCuts brand.
Behind the Closure
According to a statement released by the DesignCuts team, the company had been facing significant financial challenges for the past three years. Despite attempts to weather the storm through team adjustments and new ventures like Creative Club, the company found itself facing insolvency. The directors had reportedly gone without salaries for months in an effort to keep the business afloat.
The situation came to a head when DesignCuts could no longer sustain its Amazon hosting bills for customer downloads. The acquisition by Creative Market appears to have been a last-resort solution, with the deal including the purchase of the DesignCuts brand and original products.
Impact on Customers
The closure has left thousands of customers unable to access their purchased assets, with many reporting they had relied on DesignCuts’ assurance of lifetime access to their downloads. The company had actively encouraged users not to download everything at once, promoting their platform as a reliable storage solution for purchased assets.
Particularly affected are Creative Club subscribers, though the company has stated they will honor refund requests for membership subscriptions. A refund request form has been made available, with a February 16 deadline for submissions.
Sellers Left in the Dark
The situation has been equally challenging for sellers, many of whom learned about the closure through social media rather than official channels. Notable creators such as Nathan Brown and Lisa Glanz were reportedly not informed in advance. While DesignCuts has confirmed that sellers will receive payments for sales up until the January 16 closure date, the sudden shutdown has left many questioning their future revenue streams.
A particular concern is that seller stores are not automatically migrating to Creative Market, leaving creators to rebuild their presence on other platforms. Many sellers have reported significantly lower earnings on Creative Market compared to DesignCuts, especially those specializing in Procreate brushes and similar digital tools.

Creative Market’s Role
Creative Market’s acquisition of the DesignCuts brand has been met with mixed reactions from the community. While the deal has ensured that sellers will receive their owed payments, questions remain about the handling of existing customer purchases and downloads. Creative Market has stated they are unable to access any historical DesignCuts records or past purchase information.
Looking Forward
The DesignCuts team has indicated they are exploring options to provide download links privately, though they acknowledge facing “limitations in terms of cost and security.” In the meantime, some sellers are taking matters into their own hands, offering to help customers regain access to purchased products through their personal shops or websites.
For those affected by the closure, DesignCuts can be contacted at hello@designcuts.com. The company has promised to provide updates if a solution for accessing previous purchases is found.
The abrupt closure of DesignCuts serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities in digital marketplaces and the importance of maintaining local backups of purchased digital assets. It also raises questions about the responsibilities of platforms to their users and sellers during acquisitions and closures.
DesignCuts Closure Letter
Dear Design Cuts Community,
The Design Cuts approach has always been one of honesty and transparency, and today especially, you deserve nothing less. We realise that the sudden and public closure of Design Cuts has left questions for many of you – I hope today’s update can provide some clarity. As many creatives will know, it’s been a tough market in recent years. So much so, that for the past 3 years, Design Cuts has been losing money. As a self-funded startup, this has been particularly challenging, although through team adjustments, hard-work and new ventures such as Creative Club, we’ve tried to endure the storm. Directors have taken no salary for months to give us the best chance of survival. Throughout this time, we’ve been committed to continuing our regular live events and maintaining our community’s experience. We want to share a huge appreciation for our team for everything they’ve given over this period. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, last year we found ourselves facing insolvency if we took no action. We had not expected to reach that point so quickly, but some shifts within the market meant that we increasingly had less time than we could have imagined to make decisions. Faced with this, we began working frantically to try and find the best resolution for everyone – our team, our shop owners and of course, our community. In our explorations, Creative Market came to our rescue as a great ally. They agreed to purchase the DC brand, as well as take on the original products we have released, which would allow the designers involved in co-creating them to continue earning. The funds from this acquisition have ensured that we can pay out all shop owners for all sales owed, which was absolutely imperative for us, as well as being able to honour any refund requests for Creative Club subscription memberships. Whilst we know most of our customers download their assets following purchase, we recognise that for many of you, this may not be the case. Unfortunately despite our best efforts, we found ourselves in a position where we could no longer sustain our Amazon hosting bill for downloads (which is significant). As a team who truly cares about our people, this felt like an impossible choice. Of course, we want to look after everyone – but in this case, we know we’ve let some of you down as we close our doors. We understand the frustration, disappointment and even anger this series of events may have caused for some. Believe us when we say, no-one is more disappointed than us that we couldn’t continue DC into the future, or be in a position to wrap-up more ‘smoothly’. On a personal level, with the business closed, we are still working to explore potential options for trying to provide download links privately, although truthfully, we are encountering some limitations in terms of cost and security. We will try and provide an update in time if we find a solution. We want to thank you for 11 incredible years. We were not just a business, we were a community, and that’s down to all of you. Thank you, The Design Cuts Team
